We are sad and excited all at the same time for our new beginnings! This has been an amazing time for all of us at Monster Island, and we at Live With Animals are very thankful for our time here and all of the wonderful people we have been so lucky to work with. Please take this ending as a reminder of how important it is to support the art scene and never take anything for granted. We took our name from an excerpt of Walt Whitman poem and saw it fitting to name our final show after Robert Frost's Nothing Gold Can Stay...which really sums up our existence in this wonderful and quickly fading building. So alas...

Monster Island Arts and Music Festival Last Ever annual Block Party!

Monster Island, Williamsburg's landmark center for the arts home to, Live With Animals Gallery, Secret Project Robot Art Space, Kayrock Screenprinting, Todd P. Practice Spaces, Mollusk Surf Shop, Oneida and a multitude of studios and rehearsal spaces would like to say goodbye in style.

Over the last 7 years we have always thrown an annual Block Party where we invite the entire neighborhood in to listen to live bands on the street, tour the building and host 2 giant art installations; as that this is our last block party ever (the building is slated for demolition in October), we'd like your help to celebrate!

CULT OF YOUTH
ERIC COPELAND
SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE
MAN FOREVER
CALL OF THE WILD
K-HOLES
REEGAL DEEGAL
DUBKNOWDUB
VAZ
HAIR JAIL
DIVINE ORDER OF THE BLOOD WITCH
BRUTE FORCE
THESE DAYS
and more!

Two Art Installations!

In Live With Animals

"NOTHING GOLD CAN STAY"
Group art show and installation

Golden Art Installation with work by founders and friends of Live With Animals Cameron Michel, Tania Ryalls, Vashti Windish, Raul de Nieves, Kory Hellebust, Tom Delaney, Eli Lerhoff, Sto, Eli Lerhoff, Sara Gates, Matthew Craven, Martha Hipley, Carlos Ruiz, Rachel Nelson, Zach Lerhoff, Micki Pellerano, Nathan Whipple, Jessie Steat, Emma and more!

In Secret Project Robot

"OUTER SPACE THE FINAL FRONTIER"
A GROUP INSTALLATION AND THE FINAL
ART SHOW AT THIS SECRET PROJECT ROBOT LOCATION
Barry London, Sto, Kyle Hepp, John-eric Lawson, Chris uphues and Jenn, Christine Francis, Eli Lehrhoff, Brian Chase StoveTop, Martha, Kory Hellburst
Robot Death Cult, Maya Hayuk and Friends, Kayrock, Zach Lehrhoff, Allison Awesome and Call of the Wild, Cameron Michel...

Live With Animals will continue to do curatorial projects in other spaces, and are happy to announce their new studio and home will be in the new Secret Project Robot location. As AA Bronson has pointed out, this historical moment was “the continuous interweaving of care-taking, funerals, memorials, anniversaries, and more deaths.“
Using the vast media culture of the late 1980s and early 1990s, which conflated queerness with illness, artists Jason Fritz Michael and Matt Momchilov consider a variety of media tactics from this time and provide a counter-reading of these images from our current moment. The work questions the limitations and failures of self-help, fashion, art, and other media as a stand in for real advocacy, activism and transformation. If we can change our bodies and futures into something not tethered to the chains of death- is this how we do it?

On View August 13th through August 28th

www.jasonfritzmichael.com
www.mattmomchilov.com

8 July 2011

Pseudoarchaeology
Paintings by Lionel Lamy

I come across my subjects through extensive research of imagery which I use as a launching point to explore the divides that exist between past and present, pre-modern and post-modern and to explore what, if anything, has been lost in terms of the spiritual, symbolic and magical experiences of mankind.

The current work deals specifically with the interplay between archetypal fragments, pseudo-histories, and general vagueries and misinterpretations in the building of new and more personal mythologies.

July 8th through July 31st
Opening Reception July 8th 7-10pm
with DJ Micki Pellerano

10 June 2011

Violet Times presents: Foggy Notion
June 10th – June 26th, 2011
Opening Reception 7-10

Featuring visual art & musical performances throughout the month from John D Morton (electric eels, X__X, Johnny & The Dicks) / Peggy Snow (Cherry Blossoms) / Timmy Vulgar (Clone Defects, Human Eye, Timmy's Organism, etc.) / Hamish Kilgour (The Clean, Great Unwashed, Mad Scene, etc.) / Ju Suk Reet Meate & Oblivia (both Smegma, The Tenses, etc.) and Neil Michael Hagerty (Royal Trux, Howling Hex, Pussy Galore)

Friday June 10th, 2011 - Opening nite party
Garbage River (featuring Timmy Vulgar & Jimbo Easter)
+ special guest: Sightings
DJ Acapulco Rodriguez

Saturday June 11th, 2011 – auxiliary party at Cake Shop, 152 Ludlow St, NY
Neil Michael Hagerty & The Howling Hex
+ special guest: comedian Ben Kronberg

Friday June 17th, 2011
John Morton & The Dunking Swine Of Chelsea
The Tenses (Ju Suk Reet Meate & Oblivia)
DJ Chris Freeman (Fusetron)

Thursday June 23rd, 2011 – Closing nite party
The Cherry Blossoms (Peggy Snow)
The Mad Scene (Hamish Kilgour)

Violet Times wants to turn you on.

Over the years of listening to my records I began to take an even greater appreciation of some of my favorite bands’ record covers. These outrageous sounds were often housed in sleeves adorned w/ equally compelling artwork, almost always done by a band member who had also made the music I was hearing.

One day whilst cruising thru a mini ‘landmark’ tour of sorts in my former South Brooklyn hood w/ one of the prime movers in Cle-punk history, a little black egg dropped out of the earhole of my skull and the idea for this visual spectacle was subsequently hatched.

Each of the Foggy Notion artists have been creating music and art for quite some time- a few have been recording & performing since as far back as the very early 70's. In some ways they are all fairly well known in the under-the-counter culture world of music & out sounds but they've all been simultaneously creating visual art throughout the years in far more obscurity. Violet Times thinks it would be great to shine a light on another aspect of what these individuals do that is most likely less known to the mass ear and eye.

This is not at all to imply that I want to have this be some kind of record cover art showcase- I’ve never wanted that at all and that’s not what one should expect when attending the exhibit. The Foggy Notion art exhibition is about their other visually artastic activities. The music as released and sleeved is only the gateway into these other endeavors. Mine, and now yours…

14 May 2011

Ocean by Cook and Gates is the first collaborative installation by Brooklyn duo, Ethan Cook and Sara Gates. The masks and costumes are worn during the ceremonial gathering called Ipcheata which is when a young Lysithean transmutates into its telepathic body. During Ipcheata, they develop from a humanoid body into orbs of light, which can communicate in visual vibrations. These glowing exchanges can be seen by the human mind’s eye when in dream states.

Cameron and Vashti operate Live With Animals, an art space in Brooklyn, NY. After printing what seemed like countless (Hepburns, Presleys, Jacksons, Monroes, Obamas, Legomen, etc,) he began to introduce more obscure faces ( G. Jones, Sock Monkeys, Luchadors, crying babies, etc). To keep his daily regiment of printing interesting while suppressing his constant fear of copyright infringing, he put his vast array of screens to work and couldn't help but begin to over lay, over print and collage all these different faces. Clint prides himself in creating works wether it be a printed face on a hood, a typographic treatment found on a tshirt or lightpost, or a giant wheatpaste of a three mouthed Marilyn on the street corner which in turn causes his double taking audience to walk away chuckling and thinking positively or better yet, sparking conversation between two strangers. Clinton's first solo show will feature a little bit of everything he makes, including a live music performance at his opening reception.

8 October 2010

October 8 - October 24

Opening Reception October 8, 6-9pm

In April 2010, on the way to observe the 60th anniversary of the Katyn massacre, the president of Poland was killed in a plane crash over the sight of the memorial. The 0th item is the initial item of a 0-based sequence, that which is numbered beginning from 0 rather than 1, such as the non-negative integers, the natural numbers.0 may be called null or nil when a number and void and nihil for nothing or 0 things. 0th is the 0th null and the 0th nil and the 0th nihil and the 0th void.

0th presents BLOW UP UNIVERSE, a new performance piece exploring what may have come before the Big Bang. It may well have been total nothingness, the inside of a black hole, the 0 before the 1. Or it could have been an elaborate scenario with dancing giants stamping sonic boom bolides, lama heads blowing up balloon universes, and many, many floating pigtails using matter to paint brush in dark stars, ring nebulas, and large hadron colliders. 0th uses music, technology, string art, dance, percussion, and robots to formulate a way back into the void of nonexistence.

Performance will take place promptly at 11:00pm in conjuction with a skype run performance at Southern Exposure on the West Coast. Employing the idea of dérive or drifts through the city they used by the International Situationist they will collect materials and bring them back to the studio. With the found objects they will create unfinished sculptural accidents that will be on display in the gallery on the opening night. The attending public will be asked to finish the work themselves with materials like candles or chains that will be laid out for them to use at their own will. By the end of the night parts of the sculptures will be free for the public to take home or to dispose of as waste, thus completing the cycle in the relation between the art process and the object.

Santiago Taccetti (Buenos Aires, Argentina, 1974) lives and works in Barcelona. A native of NYC, Tommy Turner began documenting the city in the late 1970's. He contributed to magazines such as " The Valium Addict" by Richard Kern. Soon he produced a magazine of his own, "Redrum". As his relationship with Kern grew, he went on to star in Kern's films " Submit to me Now" ,"Goodbye 42nd Street" and " Manhattan love Suicides". Tommy soon after began to make his own 16mm films, " Rat Trap" and "Simonland". Turner is best known for his collaboration with David Wajnarowicz, the film "Where Evil Dwells". Based on the experiences of suburban teenagers on a rush to murderous oblivion, the film focuses on the Northport, Long Island "Satan Teen", Ricky Kasso. Turner has subsequently been strongly associated with "cinema of transgression".

Other works include taxidermy, mainly rats which he created into fashionable ratbags and cat works for artist Lydia Lunch. Sculpture and writing are also part of his work.

Tommy has exhibited his work at the Whitney Museum, Moma, Yerba Buena Center of the Arts in San Francisco,
Anthology Film Archives in NY and the British Film Institute.

www.tommyturner.carbonmade.com

VERONICA IBARRA

Lives and works in New York City. She was born and raised in Los Angeles in a first generation Mexican-American backdrop. Her creativity owes as much to her heritage as it flows from her own personal surreal vision. After a tenure at Otis School of Art and Design she developed a reputation and career as a highly skilled make-up artist which led her to relocate to NYC. The fruit of her move can be seen in a rich body of work that includes the series "60 Avenue B"(2005) and "Los Cuentos de Hadas"(2007). In these works Veronica creates neo-baroque portraiture, often juxtaposing disposable urban spaces with fantastic personalities. She co-curated "Frock N Roll" at Local Project Gallery and has recently self published a book of photography, "Clandestine Theatre".

Veronica's subjects have included: Joanne Burke of Chromium Dumbelle, Carmen Hawk designer of Jovovich-Hawk, Emiliano Maggi, Marrietta Davis, Jon Spencer, Eva Aridjis, Tommy Turner, Lady Starlight, Ladyfag, Breedlove, and Anna Copa Cobanna.

www.viphotography.carbonmade.com
